“Destructive heroes” pose a difficult challenge to employers. They get exceptional results, bringing in new business or stellar sales. On the outside, these aggressive employees are great for the bottom line. But from the inside, demanding, argumentative, self-involved egotists leave a destructive trail in the workplace. Managers and co-workers are at a loss for dealing with their unchecked impulses, and hesitant to speak out because their own numbers might pale by comparison. So what do you do — cut them loose, cut them a break, or confront them about their unacceptable behavior? Do ultimatums work? Can this behavior be modified? Scott McGohan, CEO of McGohan Brabender, speaks from the heart on how to recognize, reform and manage a destructive hero — and how to better understand our own destructive tendencies. He knows; he once was a destructive hero. His experiences, and his turnaround, give him valuable insight into this often overlooked employee issue.
